Last month I wrote an article on this blog about a religious ceremony that was held at Shimomiya Shrine. As I explained, this ceremony was part of a larger one with the goal of preventing frost in Aso. Today, I had the chance to go to Shimomiya Shrine again and to participate in the last part to this long religious ceremony.
Le mois dernier j'ai écrit un article sur ce blog concernant une cérémonie religieuse ayant lieu au sanctuaire de Shimomiya. Comme je l'expliquais, cette cérémonie est en fait une partie seulement d'une cérémonie se déroulant sur un plus longue période. Aujourd'hui j'ai pu me rendre a nouveau au sanctuaire de Shimomiya afin d'assister à la dernière journée de cette cérémonie.
During the first day of this ceremony, a little girl lit a fire that was maintained until today. One of the first thing I saw today was this same little girl who put the fire out. She wasn't alone to do that and she had the assistance of an old woman to help her. Then started the first part of the religious ceremony. A mikoshi (a transportable shrine) was bring in front of the building where the embodiment of the deity resides. I was surprised to see that the participants put the mikoshi inside the building. But by doing that it ensures that the deity will remain hidden from everyone. Everyone, except the Shinto priest who put the deity into the Mikoshi.
Durant la première journée de cette cérémonie religieuse, une petite fille était chargée d'allumer un feu qui fut maintenu jusqu'à aujourd'hui. L'une des premières choses à laquelle j'ai pu assister ce matin c'est justement de voir cette même petite fille éteindre ce feu. Elle n'était d'ailleurs pas seule pour cette tâche car une vieille dame lui prêtait main forte. Puis débuta la première partie de cette cérémonie religieuse. Un Mikoshi (sanctuaire transportable) fut apporté devant le bâtiment qui renferme l'incarnation de la divinité du sanctuaire. J'ai été surpris de voir que le mikoshi était même transporté jusqu'à l'intérieur du bâtiment. Il s'agit en fait de cacher cette incarnation de la vue de tous. De tous, sauf du prêtre Shinto qui était chargé du transfert de l'incarnation vers le Mikoshi.
Then it was time for the procession. Shimomiya Shrine was the destination but first they made a stop at a place they call Tenshin and where the priest recited some prayers. Interesting, even if it was difficult to take pictures there with the trees blocking the view. The mikoshi was then transported to the shrine where another religious ceremony was held. To hear the priest kind of singing and see the dead leaves of the trees nearby fly around was really something.
Puis debuta la procession. Destination le sanctuaire de Shimomiya avec un arrêt au préalable dans un endroit que l'on appelle Tenshin et ou le prêtre récita une sorte de prière. Interessant meme si il était difficile de prendre des photos avec les arbres bloquant la vue. Le mikoshi fut ensuite transporté au sanctuaire ou une dernière série de prière clôtura les festivités. Quel beau spectacle d'entendre les chant du prêtre et de voir les feuilles mortes voler autour du sanctuaire.
There wasn't many outsiders taking part or assisting this festival. It is very local. I talked to one of these locals and they told me that it was very different 40 years ago with food stalls in the alley leading to the shrine and many people all around. Today you can see the locals maintaining this tradition and a few curious visitors. It is surprising because the first day of the ceremony is crowded with visitors. I also want to thank Saeki-san who supplied some of the pictures for today's blog entry. He definitely takes better picture than me and without is help you wouldn't have seen some of the main moment of this festival as well as you can now. See you soon in Aso!
Il y avait peu de visiteur prenant part ou assistant a ce festival. On peut voir que c'est très local. Un de ces locaux m'a d'ailleurs raconté que les choses étaient très différentes il y a une quarantaine d'année. Il y avait des stands de nourriture le long de l'allée menant au sanctuaire et les visiteurs étaient nombreux. Aujourd'hui il n'y a que les locaux perpétuants cette tradition ainsi que quelques curieux. C'est assez surprenant car il y a toujours beaucoup de monde pour le premier jour de la cérémonie. Je tiens a remercier Saeki-san qui m'a fourni certaines des photos pour ce blog. Il prends de bien meilleur photos que moi et sans son aide vous n'auriez pas un aussi bon aperçu des moments clés de ce festival. A bientôt sur Aso!
