As you may know the Nakadake crater is still closed and with it, the access to the trekking path towards Mount Takadake. But this is not not the only place in Aso where you can enjoy trekking and this is why today I will recommend two different courses for those who enjoy walking in the wilderness and climbing. 

Comme vous le savez peut être déjà, le cratère du mont Nakadake est actuellement fermé et avec lui le chemin de randonnée menant au mont Takadake. Mais il ne s'agit pas du seul endroit ou il est possible de partir en randonnée et c'est pourquoi aujourd'hui je vais vous présenter deux randonnée pour le moins différente à destination de ceux qui aiment errer en pleine nature et gravir les monts.

My first recommendation is mount Eboshi. I already wrote about it on this blog but was able to go back there two days ago to check if the situation changed. The only thing that really changed is the temperature. Last time I was able to climb on mount Eboshi the top was frozen and the wind was so cold. It wasn't the case two days ago so I enjoyed the hike a lot more than during the middle of winter. It was raining a couple days before the climb so some part of the path to the top were slippery. As you can see on the picture below, the path turned into mud and I recommend you to be very careful or even to avoid climbing on mount Eboshi after a rainy day. 
It took me about 50 minutes to reach the top and finally be able to enjoy the scenery. From Eboshidake you have a great view on the Nakadake crater, Kusasenri, mount Kijima and on a clear day on the caldera itself with the outer rim on the back. You can start the climb to mount Eboshi from Kusasenri in front of the volcano museum. Nevertheless I recommend you to climb on Mount Kijima instead if you are with kids or if it rained recently. 

Ma première recommandation est le mont Eboshi. J'ai déjà écrit à ce sujet sur ce même blog mais j'ai eu l'opportunité de m'y rendre a nouveau il y a de cela deux jours maintenant afin de voir si la situation avait évolué. Le seul véritable changement est la température. Lors de ma dernière ascension le sommet était encore gelé et le vent légèrement glacial. Ce n'est plus le cas actuellement ce qui m'a permit de bien plus apprécié cette randonnée. Il y a eu de la pluie quelques jours auparavant et certaines parties du chemin était assez glissantes. Comme on peut l'apercevoir sur la photo ci-dessous, certains passages sont très boueux et je vous recommande donc la plus grande prudence voire d'éviter l'ascension après les jours de pluie.
Il aura fallu une cinquantaine de minutes pour rejoindre le sommet et enfin profiter au mieux du paysage. Depuis le mont Eboshi, vous avez le droit a de très belles vues sur le cratère du mont Nakadake, Kusasenri, le mont Kijima et par temps clair sur la bordure extérieure. Vous pouvez accéder au mont Eboshi depuis Kusasenri devant le musée du volcan. Je vous recommande néanmoins le mont Kijima si vous êtes avec des enfants.

My second recommendation is a little more peculiar and it may be difficult to access if you don't have a car but it is well worth it. It is an ancient historic road paved with stones that you can use to reach the outer rim from the inside of the caldera. It is situated on an area called Matoishi near the Futae no Touge pass that you use to come to Aso from Kumamoto. It is a short hike (about 30 minutes) but it can be difficult to walk on the stones. 
This path was used by the lords of Kumamoto during the Edo period to reach the capital. You can still feel the historic atmosphere when walking on this path today. When you're about to reach the top, you can enjoy a great view on mount Aso. This a place I really enjoy a lot myself and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys history or just hiking on a beautiful path. 

Ma seconde recommandation est un peu plus particulière et peut être aussi difficile d'accès si vous n'avez pas de véhicule à votre disposition. Il s'agit d'une ancienne route historique pavée grâce à laquelle vous pouvez atteindre le haut de la bordure extérieure de la caldera d'Aso. Cette route est située dans un quartier du nom de Matoishi non loin du Futae no Touge pass qui est la route par laquelle on accède a Aso depuis Kumamoto. C'est une courte randonnée d'une trentaine de minutes mais qui peut être un peu éprouvante à cause des pierres qui la pavent. 
Ce chemin était utilisé par les seigneurs de Kumamoto pendant la période d'Edo afin de rejoindre la capitale. Il est toujours possible de ressentir cette atmosphère historique de nos jours. Une fois proche du sommet vous pouvez profiter d'une superbe vue sur le mont Aso. C'est un endroit que j'apprécie tout particulièrement et que je recommande a tout fan d'histoire ou de beaux paysages.

Yesterday, I was able to eat some delicious Akaushi beef while seating in the middle of a grassland. If you're a regular reader of this blog you already know that I especially love meat, so you can guess that this is a part of my job that I enjoy a lot. 

Hier, j'ai pu manger de la délicieuse viande de boeuf Akashi en plein milieu d'une prairie d'Aso. Si vous êtes un lecteur régulier de ce blog, vous savez déjà que j'apprécie tout particulièrement cette viande et vous vous doutez donc que c'est une partie de mon travail qui me donne beaucoup de plaisir.

This barbecue was organized in the middle of a grassland near the famous Komezuka. For those of you who doesn't know about it, it is an almost perfectly shaped cone standing on the way to the Nakadake crater. The komezuka looks like a bowl of rice put upside down and it attracts many tourists. Not far from the base of the Komezuka you'll find a parking space equipped with toilets where I parked my car. It took me less than two minutes to enter the grassland and join the stand where the barbecue was starting. 

Ce barbecue était donc organisé en plein milieu d'une prairie non loin du Komezuka. Le komezuka est célèbre pour sa forme conique presque parfaite. Il est dit qu'il représente un bol de riz posé a l'envers. Pres de la base du Komezuka, se trouve un parking équipé de toilettes ou j'ai pu garer ma voiture. A moins de deux minutes à pied de ce parking se trouve le stand pour le barbecue, en plein milieu de cette prairie.

But before I go further in my description, i must warn you that it Aso grasslands are protected and tourists are not allowed to enter. This is a special kind of event with a special authorization. If you're interested in visiting grasslands, Michi no Eki Aso is organizing guided tours called Bokuya guide tours but without a proper authorization, trespassing is not allowed. 

Mais avant que je ne poursuive cette description, je dois d'abord vous prévenir que les prairies d'Aso sont protégées et que les touristes ne se pas autorisés à y pénétrer. L'événement que je vous présente aujourd'hui bénéficie d'une autorisation spéciale. Si vous êtes intéressé par la visite d'une de ces prairies, Michi no Eki Aso organise des sorties guidées (Bokuya guide tour) mais sans autorisation, l'entrée est interdite aux touristes.

The view from the stand is really beautiful as you can see on the pictures. When the weather permits it, this is the perfect place to enjoy your meal. Speaking of meal, we were served some Akaushi beef. Akaushi is a very popular specialty of Aso and you can find it on the menu of many restaurants all around the area. 

La vue depuis le stand est vraiment superbe, comme vous pouvez le voir sur les photos. Quand le temps le permet, c'est vraiment un endroit idéal pour profiter d'un bon repas. En parlant de repas, nous avons eu le droit a de la viande de boeuf Akaushi. Cette viande est une spécialité d'Aso que vous trouverez au menu de nombreux restaurants de la région.

Yes, it is as good as it looks on the pictures. The meat was well seasoned and really soft. So delicious! And eating surrounded by such a beautiful nature is a big plus. The stand is big enough to welcome about 40 participants. This was like a pre-event, the real events starting next month. Twelve dates are planned already until the month of September. Oui, c'est aussi bon que ça en a l'air! La viande était bien assaisonnée en plus d'être très tendre. Vraiment délicieux! Et manger devant un tel paysage est un gros plus. Ce stand est assez grand pour accueillir pas loin de 40 personnes. 12 dates sont déjà prévues entre le mois d'avril et le mois de septembre de cette année.
